The Alfa Romeo Brera is a 2+2 coupe that blends executive-style luxury with sporting responses. Its cohesive, sculpted shape, which is the work of Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, is unmistakably Alfa Romeo in character and unashamedly contemporary in its appeal.
The squat, purposeful stance conveys an innate athleticism, which is an attribute that is underscored by the precise steering, sharply-honed chassis and advanced engineering. All three engines in the line-up are muscular, smooth and characterful.
Comfort features high on the Alfa Romeo Brera’s list of priorities, together with a generous array of safety, luxury and convenience-related equipment. Above all, the Alfa Romeo Brera’s core attractions are character, sportiness and quality.
The Alfa Romeo Brera is available with two side doors and a hatchback that opens on to a 300-litre boot. The two rear seats fold down to extend cargo space to 610 litres.
Each of the six models mentioned above is available in one trim level but the Alfa Romeo Brera’s specification reflects its role as a luxury sporting coupe. As a result, all models are equipped with dual-zone climate control, a six-speaker radio/CD sound system, cruise control, electrically-folding and heated door mirrors, rear parking sensors and alloy wheels.
Leather upholstery, a panoramic glass roof, bi-xenon headlights and satellite navigation are all available as optional extras across the range.
Safety is a major priority in the Alfa Romeo Brera and seven airbags, including one to protect the driver’s knees are fitted to every model. Buyers also have the option of specifying an eighth airbag to protect the front passenger’s knees.
There are ISOFIX child seat mounting points and an airbag deactivation switch to enable a rear-facing child seat to be fitted in the front. Both rear seats are fitted with three-point seatbelts.
Electronic driver aids enhance safety further. As well as VDC stability control and ASR anti-skid, the Alfa Romeo Brera features one of the most advanced anti-lock braking systems available. It includes electronic brakeforce distribution and hydraulic brake assist, which boosts stopping power in an emergency. An immobiliser and alarm are standard on all models.
The lowest emitting Alfa Romeo Brera is the 2.4 JTDm diesel with 179g/km. Its petrol equivalent, the 2.2 JTS, emits 218g/km.
The Alfa Romeo Brera offers a diverse technical specification, especially for a six-model line-up. The three available engines offer the choice of a four, five or six-cylinder configuration and either diesel or petrol. In addition, there’s the option of front-wheel drive or Q4 four-wheel drive as well as six-speed manual or Q-Tronic automatic transmissions.
The 185bhp 2.2 JTS has a four-cylinder petrol engine available with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. It combines 139mph performance with 30.7mpg economy and CO2 emissions of 218g/km.
The diesel-powered five-cylinder 2.4 JTDm is available with a choice of manual or Q-Tronic transmissions, both sending drive to the front wheels. In manual form it delivers impressive pace of 144mph and 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds but is capable of an equally impressive 41.5mpg and 179g/km. The 2.4 JTDm develops 200bhp in Q-Tronic form and 210bhp in manual guise.
All three 3.2 JTS V6 variants are petrol powered and produce 260bhp. Such power bestows exhilarating performance that arrives in a smooth, refined fashion irrespective of the technical layout. The 3.2 JTS V6 is available with a manual gearbox driving the front wheels or with Q4 four-wheel drive in a choice of manual or Q-Tronic transmissions. In manual, front-wheel-drive format it can sprint to 62mph in seven seconds and attain 155mph. Fuel economy is rated at 25.7mph and emissions at 260g/km.
The 2.2 JTS petrol variant Alfa Romeo Brera is priced from £23,417. The 3.2 JTS V6 petrol Alfa Romeo Brera is £26,846 and the 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 four-wheel-drive version is priced at £28,804. The top model in the line-up is the 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 Q-Tronic, which is priced at £30,223.
