The Alfa Romeo GT has two doors that reveal a surprisingly roomy cabin and a fully-opening hatchback for easy access to the 320-litre boot. The 60:40 split rear seats increase the luggage area to 905 litres when folded flat.
Entry-level models are equipped as standard with dual-zone climate control, electric front windows, radio/CD player with MP3 reader, cruise control, an alarm, multi-function trip computer, electrically-adjustable heated door mirrors and alloy wheels.
Additional features on the higher-specification Lusso versions include leather upholstery, a Bose sound system and rear parking sensors.
Under the Alfa Romeo GT’s elegant bodywork sits a torsionally-rigid structure that provides a strong, protective safety cell for all occupants in the event of an accident as well as helping to deliver sporting responses in normal driving. In addition, the Alfa Romeo GT is fitted as standard with six airbags including the latest generation of window airbags, a collapsible steering column, side-impact bars and energy-absorbing trim. There’s a straightforward choice between one petrol and one diesel engine in the Alfa Romeo GT category. Both display a finely judged balance between fuel efficiency and the performance expected of a coupe.
The 2.0-litre petrol, badged 2.0 JTS, develops 165bhp and 206Nm of pulling power. Coupled with an energetic nature and willingness to rev freely, that produces lively performance. The 2.0 JTS is capable of sprinting from standstill to 62mph in 8.7 seconds and can attain a top speed of 134mph.
However, such pace doesn’t come at the expense of fuel economy. The 2.0 JTS, which drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, offers 32.5mpg fuel economy and emits 207g/km of CO2.
The diesel engine in the line-up is the 1.9 JTDm 16v, which delivers 150bhp backed by a forceful 305Nm of pulling power. That’s sufficient to propel the Alfa Romeo GT from zero to 62mph in 9.6 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 130mph. Fuel economy, meanwhile, is also impressive, with the official combined average being 45.6mpg whilst emissions are 165g/km. All diesel Alfa Romeo GTs have a six-speed manual gearbox that, like the petrol models, sends drive to the front wheels.
The range-topping model is the 1.9 JTDm 16v Q2 that features sports suspension and the sophisticated Q2 limited slip differential system, which gives heightened cornering control and enhanced traction in difficult conditions.
The high-quality, classy-looking design of the Alfa Romeo GT belies the fact that prices start at just £20,309. That’s for the 2.0 JTS petrol model in standard trim. Upgrade to Lusso specification and it is £22,071.
The 1.9 JTDm 16v Alfa Romeo GT diesel model in standard guise is £21,482. The Lusso version, as with the petrol models, carries a £1,800 premium. The range-topping variant is the 1.9 JTDm 16v Q2 diesel, priced at £23,929.
