Honda Civics are well equipped with air conditioning, alloy wheels, electric windows, CD sound systems and electronic stability programme in addition to front, side and curtain air bags. Some also have Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation and traction control. Metallic paint is an extra-cost option on all whilst automatic transmission is available on most.

The Honda Civic gets four stars for adult and child occupant protection plus a three-star rating for pedestrian safety in the event of a collision.

All Civics are equipped with front, side and curtain air bags to protect occupants and there is stability control to combat skids plus traction control on the higher-powered models. Most Civic models also have active head restraints, which reduce the danger of whiplash, whilst in terms of security there are alarms, deadlocks and an immobiliser fitted to every model.

Environmentally, the Civic has a CO2 figure as low as 135g/km in the case of the 1.4-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel models, rising to 156g/km for the 2.0 i-VTEC and 215g/km for the 146mph Type-R.

The Honda Civic Hatchback comes with a choice of 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines and an advanced 2.2-litre turbodiesel.

The 1.4-litre models of the Civic generate 99bhp of power and 93lb/ft of torque, which results in economy of 48mpg and a CO2 figure of 135g/km. The 0-60mph acceleration time is 13 seconds and the top speed is 110mph.

The 1.8-litre petrol models have a power output of 138bhp and pulling power of 128lb/ft. The 0-60mph acceleration time is 8.6 seconds, the top speed is 129mph, economy averages 44mpg and the CO2 rating ranges from 152-156g/km.

In the case of the 2.0-litre models the power output is 198bhp with 142lb/ft of torque. Acceleration to 60mph takes just 7.2 seconds and the top speed is 146mph. Economy is 31mpg and the CO2 figure is 215g/km.

The 2.2-litre turbodiesel models have a power output of 138bhp and pulling power of 251lb/ft. Acceleration to 60mph takes 8.6 seconds and the top speed is 130mph. The CO2 rating ranges from 135g/km to 140g/km and economy averages 54mpg.

Honda Civic prices start at £15,315 for the 1.4 i-VTEC S.

The 1.8 i-VTEC Civic is £16,970 for the S. 

The Type S GT Honda Civic is £18,095. The three-door Type R and Type R GT cost £20,000 and £21,105 respectively.

The 2.2 i-CTDi Civic costs £18,475 for the S, rising to £19,600 for the Type S GT. Metallic paint is an additional £400.
