The Hyundai i20 is one of the most affordable small cars to buy despite boasting a remarkably generous equipment list and is among the most economical to run.

Build quality is top drawer, there is a choice of three and five door body styles, petrol and diesel engines and manual or automatic transmissions.

All Hyundai i20 models are equipped with power steering, central locking, air conditioning, traction control, front, side and curtain air bags, electric front windows, split-fold rear seats and an MP3-compatible CD sound system.

Most i20 models also have alloy wheels as standard and some have electric mirrors and rear windows. Options include electronic stability programme at £250, metallic paint priced at £355 and automatic transmission priced at £900.

The Hyundai i20 gets a maximum EuroNCAP safety score of five stars for adult and child occupant protection. All models have front, side and curtain air bags, front seat belt pretensioners, traction control, electronic stability programme and anti-drowsiness air conditioning. There is also an optional rear parking sensor system.

The Hyundai i20 has two petrol engines of 1.2 and 1.4 litres plus a diesel unit of 1.4 litres with a choice of power outputs. The Style version of the 1.4-litre petrol model is also offered with an automatic transmission option.

The i20 1.2-litre engine has a power output of 77bhp and pulling power of 88lb/ft. This results in a 0-60mph acceleration time of 12.9 seconds, a top speed of 103mph, economy of 54.3mpg and a CO2 figure of 124g/km.

The i20 1.4-litre petrol engine generates 98bhp of power and 101lb/ft of pulling power. The 0-60mph acceleration time is 11.6 seconds and the top speed is 112mph. Economy averages 50.4mpg and the CO2 figure is 133g/km. Automatic transmission alters the 0-60mph acceleration time to 12.9 seconds. The top speed is 107mph, economy is 45.6mpg and the CO2 figure is 146g/km.

The i20 1.4-litre diesel engines offer a choice of power outputs of 75bhp and 90bhp. The 74bhp unit has pulling power of 162lb/ft, acceleration to 60mph in 16.2 seconds, a top speed of 100mph, economy of 64mpg and a CO2 figure of 116g/km.

The more powerful 88bhp version reduces the 0-60mph acceleration time to 13.6 seconds and raises the top speed to 106mph with minimal effect on economy.

The Hyundai i20 prices start at £9,220 for the 1.2 Classic three-door and £9,680 for the five door. The 1.2 Comfort is priced at £10,040 and the five door is £10,500.

The 1.4 Comfort three door costs £10,660 and the five door is £11,120 with the Style priced at £12,050. The 1.4 CRDi 75ps Comfort three door is £11,145 and the five door costs £11,605. The more powerful 1.4 CRDi 90ps Style is priced at £13,035

The new well equipped i20 edition 3dr is £10,445 and the 5dr is £10,905.
