The Kia Sorento is a five-door 4x4 with five seats in a very spacious, practical cabin. It also offers considerable carrying capacity. With the rear seats upright, the boot accommodates a substantial 849 litres. Fold them flat and 1850 litres become available.
Equipment levels are no less noteworthy. Alloy wheels, roof rails, front fog lamps, tinted windows, remote central locking and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors are standard fitments. Inside all models feature air conditioning, four electric windows, an eight-speaker CD sound system and 60:40 split folding rear seats.
The Kia Sorento is as unstinting with its safety equipment as it is in its provision of comfort-related features. Every model features twin front airbags and full-length curtain airbags as standard. The passenger airbag can be switched off manually to enable the fitment of a rear-facing child seat in the front. ISOFIX child seat mounting points are provided in the rear, as well as a trio of three-point seatbelts.
Electronic safety aids include ABS anti-lock brakes with EDB (electronic brakeforce distribution) on all models. XT variants also feature ESP stability control.
Every Sorento is equipped with four-wheel drive for added traction in all weather conditions. Four-wheel drive is electronically selectable on XE versions. Other models deploy Kia’s ATT (Active Torque Transfer) permanent four-wheel drive system.
The vast majority of Kia Sorento’s are powered by a 2.5-litre CRDi diesel engine. This common-rail four-cylinder engine uses direct injection to maximise fuel efficiency, improve refinement and deliver strong pulling power.
A substantial 392Nm of hauling muscle is available at just 2000rpm, which helps to make the Sorento such a formidable towing vehicle as well as very biddable in everyday traffic and on the motorway. This real-world performance is reinforced by peak power of 168bhp at 3800rpm.
The 2.5 CRDi is available with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, both offering five forward gears. Each variant can deliver 113mph performance. The manual variant combines this with combined average fuel economy of 35.8mpg. In automatic form, the 2.5 CRDi achieves 32.8mpg combined economy.
The Kia Sorento is priced very competitively, even before factoring in the amount of space, ability and equipment it offers. The entry-level model, the 2.5 Kia Sorento CRDi XE, is priced at just £20,395. The same diesel engine in mid-spec XS trim is £23,445 and top-grade XT specification costs £25,445. Each of these variants is available with automatic transmission for an additional £1300. The petrol-powered 3.3 V6 Titan auto version is £27,135.
