A high degree of quality and refinement allowed the Lexus LS to make a big impact on the luxury car scene when the Lexus brand was launched here in 1990. Since then the original concept has been honed to still greater levels of perfection, now boasting unique features that make it a masterpiece of automotive technology and one of the safest cars in the world. Powered by a new 4.6-litre V8 engine, the flagship Lexus LS 460 is designed to provide the ultimate in travelling comfort and is an impressive and spacious saloon that has a suspension system with different ride settings to suit driving conditions and a clever electric steering system that reduces effort when parking. In the hybrid Lexus LS600h version, the world’s first full-time all-wheel drive full hybrid powertrain offers diesel economy with the performance to match a V12 petrol engine. Its five-litre V8 engine is teamed with an electric motor, allowing the car to remain silent up to around 30mph, when it reverts to traditional propulsion.

The Lexus LS 460 is the first car in its class to provide a rear parking monitor as standard and key features of its comprehensive equipment list include a high-speed satellite navigation system with a traffic avoidance function. The system has voice-command recognition for control of audio, ventilation, navigation and Bluetooth hands-free phone functions. The standard ten-speaker sound system has a six-disc, in-dash CD autochanger with wheel-mounted controls and for the ultimate in on-board entertainment, Lexus SE and Lexus SE-L models have the latest 19-speaker, 450W Mark Levinson reference sound system. Using the car’s navigation display screen, it delivers a home theatre experience in music, music videos and DVD movies, whilst passengers in the rear are able to experience the system using a retractable, ceiling-mounted nine-inch LCD wide screen.
The fourth generation Lexus LS bristles with innovation and contains more sophisticated safety technology than any other car. Systems that detect when an accident is likely to happen and intervene to help the driver avoid a collision or reduce the risk of injury to occupants, pedestrians or other road users are packaged in PCS, which is a pre-crash safety programme that features four world ‘firsts’ and is fitted as standard on the 460 SE-L. The 460 is also the only car in its class to be fitted with an electro-hydraulic braking system to provide independent hydraulic power to each wheel for more precise distribution of braking power. Comprehensive airbag protection includes front and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus front and rear side airbags and full-length curtain airbags.
The LS emits 261g/km of CO2, whilst the figure for the 600h is 219g/km.
A 4.6-litre V8 engine drives the Lexus LS. With the first electrically-operated camshaft and variable valve timing system, the engine produces 375bhp to sweep the car to 60mph from standstill in 5.7 seconds and returns average economy of 25.4mpg. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. Teamed with an electric motor, the five-litre V8 engine in the hybrid LS 600h generates a combined 439bhp to accelerate to 60mph in 6.3 seconds. An electronic limiter keeps the top speed at 155mph, whilst average economy is 30.4mpg.
Three Lexus LS models feature in the 460 line-up and prices start at £57,755. The 460 SE costs £65,755 and an additional £6,000 secures the range-topping 460 SE-L. The LS600h costs from £81,460, with the long wheelbase 600hL costing £83,705. Equipped with a rear seat relaxation package, the L version is priced at £88,060.
