Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra is a chic supermini available in three-door and five-door body styles. Despite its compact exterior dimensions the cabin is roomy and offers seating for five. It also exudes solidity, has thoughtful design details and is well equipped. Ease-to-use technology is a key attribute of its specification.

The refined, free-revving engines are fuel-efficient and one of the reasons why the Nissan Micra has low running costs. It’s also a nimble car, which pays dividends whether you’re threading it through urban streets or along twisting country lanes.

The Nissan Micra is the most compact model in the Nissan line-up. A convertible version with a folding hard-top, the Nissan Micra C+C is reviewed separately.

The Nissan Micra line-up allows a fine degree of personalisation. There is a choice of three and five-door body styles, petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmission, four grades of trim, ten different colours and four interior themes in fabric or leather.

The trim levels in rising order of plushness, are Visia, Acenta, Micra 25, Tekna and Active Luxury. There is also a sporty SR model in three and five-door form. All versions feature power steering, central locking with keyless entry, 60:40 split-sliding rear seat and a CD/radio sound system with MP3 jack.

Most Nissan Micra’s also come with air conditioning, electric windows and integrated Bluetooth. Top models have Alcantara and leather trim, heated front seats, climate control, automatic lights and wipers, six-disc CD multichanger and alloy wheels.

Both are key factors in the technical design of the Nissan Micra. Safety provision is extensive and sophisticated electronic aids fitted to every model include ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and Brake Assist, which helps give maximum stopping power during emergency braking. Twin front airbags and side airbags feature across the range. Curtain airbags and ESP stability control are available as options.

Every Nissan Micra is also equipped with anti-whiplash head restraints in the front, ISOFIX child seat mounting points, three-point seatbelts for all five occupants, front airbag deactivation switch and on five-door cars child safety locks on the rear doors. The Nissan Micra has been awarded four stars by EuroNCAP for safety.

There are five different power outputs from the Nissan Micra’s range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. All supply power to the front wheels and are available with five-speed manual gearboxes. A four-speed automatic transmission is also offered on selected 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol variants.

The 1.2-litre engine comes in two states of tune. The 64bhp version provides the entry-point to the Nissan Micra line-up and the 79bhp variant features more broadly across the range. Both versions generate 110Nm of pull and deliver an official average fuel economy of 47.9mpg in manual form. The entry-level 1.2 gives 95mph performance and the higher-powered 1.2 runs to 104mph.

The 1.4-litre petrol engine raises performance to 107mph, again in manual guise. Its 87bhp is backed by 128Nm of muscle and fuel-efficiency extends to a combined average of 44.8mpg.
A powerful 1.6-litre engine tops the petrol line-up. It develops 108bhp and 153Nm of pulling power, which enables it to achieve a 114mph top speed and reach 60mph from standstill in 9.8 seconds. It remains economical, however, with an official average of 42.8mpg.

Diesel fans are treated to a smooth, lusty 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. The 1.5 dCi generates 85bhp and 200Nm of pulling strength for 106mph performance. This engine is also the most frugal in the line-up with its combined economy rated at 60.1mpg.

CO2 emissions of the 1.5 dCi diesel are just 125g/km and 1.2-litre petrol variants emit 139g/km in manual guise.

Nissan Micra ownership begins at £7,535 with the 1.2 16v Visia 3dr. The same car with Acenta trim is £9,072, £9,591 for the Micra 25 and £10,324 in Tekna grade. The 1.4 16v line-up begins with the £9,366 Acenta 3dr whilst in the case of 1.5 dCi variants the entry model is the £8,669 Visia 3dr. The sporty 1.6 16v SR is £10,863 in three-door form and the range-topper is the £12,331 1.6 16v Active Luxury 5dr. Three-door cars are £650 cheaper than equivalent five-doors. Automatic transmission is available on selected models for £900.
