The Nissan Note is five-door hatchback that throws the focus on intelligent functionality, quality, style and space. In size, it falls between the Micra supermini and compact Qashqai in Nissan’s line-up but its cabin offers a level of accommodation and adaptability more normally found in larger MPVs.

The Nissan Note also exhibits a fun-to-drive attitude, with a range of energetic, refined petrol engines and a broad-shouldered, fuel-efficient diesel. Nimble handling proves an asset around town and on country lanes, while a smooth ride really comes into its own on a longer cruise.

The five-door Nissan Note has five seats in its versatile, practical cabin. There are a dozen storage areas in the front alone, including a nine-litre glovebox. The boot offers a minimum of 280 litres, while collapsing the rear seats increases load space to 1332 litres. An ingenious Flexi-board system is available for even greater adaptability of boot space.

The Nissan Note is available in more than ten colours and five trim levels. All feature power steering, remote central locking, a CD/radio sound system with MP3 jack, electric front windows and 60:40 split, folding and sliding rear seat. Most models have air conditioning or climate control, many feature alloy wheels and Tekna trim includes leather seats, rain-sensing wipers and automatic lights.

The Nissan Note’s safety credentials are underlined by the fitment to every model of ABS anti-lock brakes with EDB (electronic brakeforce distribution) and Brake Assist. Tekna models are also equipped with ESP electronic stability control.

Should the worst happen, there is the reassurance that the Nissan Note has been crash-tested by EuroNCAP and achieved a strong four-star rating. It is also fitted with a minimum of four airbags (twin front and side airbags). Acenta and Tekna models feature curtain airbags as well and anti-whiplash active head restraints.

ISOFIX child seat mounting points are included on every model, along with a passenger airbag cut-off switch to enable the use of a rear-facing child seat in the front. All five seats have three-point belts.

The Nissan Note is a clean vehicle, with all versions emitting less than 160g/km of CO2. The 1.5 dCi diesel is rated at just 119g/km and the 1.4 16v petrol at 150g/km.

One diesel and two petrol engines feature in the Nissan Note line-up. Each has been tuned for a smooth, eager power delivery and drives the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is also available on the most powerful engine in the range, the 1.6-litre petrol.

The 1.6-litre engine develops 108bhp and 153Nm of pull to endow it, when fitted with a manual gearbox with 114mph performance and the ability to sprint to 60mph from rest in just 10.7 seconds. Economy is equally impressive at 42.8mpg. The automatic version of the 1.6 is barely any less fuel efficient, with 41.5mpg and a 108mph top speed.

Even greater economy is offered by the other petrol engine, the 1.4-litre 16-valve. This variant achieves a combined average of 44.8mpg. It also uses a drive-by-wire throttle for crisp responses and generates 87bhp, backed by 127Nm of pull. As a result, it offers 103mph performance.

The diesel engine is a 1.5 dCi that harnesses the latest common rail technology to give strong, quiet and frugal operation. It is the most fuel-efficient engine in the line-up, with a combined average of 57.6mpg, which would allow it to travel more than 575 miles on a single tank of fuel. Its 85bhp and 200Nm of hauling muscle provide easily-accessed responses and 104mph performance.

For the quality, equipment and space, the Nissan Note is very keenly priced, starting with the 1.4 16v Visia at £10,895, the Visia 1.5 dCi diesel model for £11,895 and 1.6 16v starter model at £11,695.

The popular 1.4 16v n-tec model comes in at £12,795.

The range tops out with the Tekna 1.6 automatic at £15,495. Automatic transmission is offered on 1.6 models.
