The Nissan Qashqai is a compact five-door that combines the nimbleness of a hatchback with the toughness of an SUV. That makes it perfectly suited to an urban environment, whilst its raised ground clearance and optional All-Mode 4x4 give the potential for off-road activity too.
The Nissan Qashqai practicality lies at the heart of the stylish cabin, which features plenty of clever storage areas, including a 14-litre glove box. The boot provides 420 litres of carrying capacity in normal use and up to 860 litres of cargo space is available if needed.
Five interior themes and more than 10 exterior colours give a good level of personalisation. There are also three grades of trim: Visia, mid-range Acenta and top-level Tekna.
The Nissan Qashqai’s excellent safety credentials include a top five-star crash test score awarded by EuroNCAP. The level of related equipment is comprehensive and extends to the fitting of six airbags across the range.
Every Nissan Qashqai also comes with anti-whiplash active front head restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners, ISOFIX child seat mounting points and a trio of three-point belts in the rear.
All models benefit from ABS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist and EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution). ESP electronic stability control is fitted as standard to the 2.0 petrol and 2.0 dCi diesel models and available as an option on 1.6 petrol and 1.5 dCi diesel variants.
The technical line-up is diverse so buyers should be able to find a Nissan Qashqai to suit their needs. There are two petrol engines, two diesels, manual transmissions with five and six speeds, two types of automatic transmission and a choice of All-Mode four-wheel drive (badged 4WD) and two-wheel drive (2WD).
Two-wheel-drive versions are powered by the front wheels and available with all four engines. Four-wheel-drive models have either a 2.0 petrol or 2.0 dCi diesel engine.
The most economical choice is the 1.5 dCi diesel, which has a combined average of 54.3mpg. This 105bhp engine drives through a six-speed manual gearbox and is capable of 108mph performance. Its petrol equivalent is the 1.6 16v, which channels its 113bhp through a five-speed manual gearbox to give 109mph pace and 42.2mpg economy.
The 138bhp 2.0 16v petrol is available with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. Both options are available in 2WD and 4WD guises. The manual 2.0 16v 2WD combines 119mph performance with 34.9mpg, while the 4WD version delivers 118mph pace and 33.6mpg economy.
Entry-level Visia trim is priced from £14,048 for the 1.6 16v 2WD petrol model and the starter diesel model is the 1.5dCi 2WD Visia at £15,339. Mid-range Acenta trim carries a £1,500 premium over Visia. Tekna trim is £1500 more than Acenta and the range-topper is the £22,270 Tekna 2.0 dCi 4WD six-speed automatic. Two-wheel-drive models are £1,400 cheaper than four-wheel-drive versions.
