The New Megane Coupe is a stylish three-door model with the accent upon sportiness whilst offering the practicality of five proper seats within its sleek body.

It comes with a choice of half a dozen engines and several firsts for Renault including the continuously variable transmission system that has been used so successfully by partner Nissan.

The Renault Megane Coupe’s impressive safety credentials include visual seatbelt reminder warnings for all five seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system and bi-Xenon headlamps incorporating dipped beam cornering lights as well as auto lights and wipers plus cruise control and speed limiter.

Electronic stability programme with anti-skid regulation and understeer control are standard safety features in the Megane Coupe and some models are also equipped with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist.

All models have front and side air bags amounting to six in total.

Controlled deformation ensures that occupants are subjected to lower deceleration forces and this is combined with the third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection.

Almost 70 per cent of all sales will be Megane Coupe models that meet the three criteria required to qualify for the Renault eco² signature. This means that CO2 emissions are less than 140g/km or biofuel-compatible, manufacture is in an ISO 14001-certified factory, the cars are 95 per cent end-of-life recoverable and at least five per cent of the plastics are sourced from recycling.

There are six engines on offer with the New Megane Coupe, comprising three petrol units of 1.6 litres generating 110bhp, 2.0 litres with 140bhp and 2.0 litres with 180bhp.

The three diesel units are 1.5 dCi 86, 1.5 dCi 106 and 1.9 dCi 130. More follow during 2009.

As the sportier model in the Megane range, the Coupe does without the 1.6 100bhp engine of the five-door but gains Renault’s first continuous variable transmission with the 2.0-litre 140bhp petrol engine.

Six-speed manual gearboxes are standard across the Megane Coupe range with the exception of the 1.5 dCi 86 which is five-speed and the CVT.

Renault's latest petrol engine, the TCe 130 is an addition to the range from spring 2009. This new, fuel-efficient 1,397cc unit packs the 130bhp power of a 1.8-litre engine and the 190 Nm torque of a 2.0-litre yet its CO2 emissions are less than those of a 1.6.

The dCi 86 and dCi 106 engines have low CO2 emissions of 118g/km for the dCi 86 and 120g/km for the dCi 106, while the dCi 130 has CO2 emissions of just 135g/km. Newest addition to the line-up is the dCi 160 coupled with a manual gearbox and the dCi 150 mated to automatic transmission.

Performance ranges from a 0-60mph time of 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 119mph for the 1.6-litre petrol model to a 0-60mph acceleration time of 12.7 seconds and a 108mph top speed for the 1.5dCi 86 with economy figures of 40.9mpg and 62.8mpg respectively.

The entry-level Renault Megane Coupe is the 1.6-litre petrol model with a 110bhp engine and Expression trim costing £16,855. The same Megane Coupe model with higher-specification Dynamique trim is £18,055

The entry-level diesel Megane Coupe is the 1.5-litre 86bhp Expression at £17,915, with the more powerful 106bhp version costing £18,415. This model is also available with Dynamique trim at £19,615.

The TCE 130 Dynamique is £19,055 and the Privilege version costs £19,930. The 1.9 dCi 130 costs £20,740 with Dynamique trim and is £21,640 in Privilege form. There is also a Dynamique 2.0-litre 140bhp model with continuously variable transmission for £20,125.

The new Megane Renaultsport 250 start at £23,160 with Cup trim and rises to £26,060 with Cup Chassis and Recaro Pack.
