The latest Renault Scenic costs up to £2,000 less than the model it replaced and comes with a choice of 28 versions embracing five levels of trim and equipment plus a range of three petrol and five diesel engines.

A mid-range MPV with five seats and loads of luggage space, the accent is upon practicality and versatility with high levels of equipment and low running costs.

The Scenic is awarded top marks for safety and in this latest guise gets three new engines and transmissions including ultra-low emissions models and a continuously variable transmission option.

The Renault Scenic range starts with the Extreme, which is equipped with a 4x15W RDS CD radio with MP3 compatibility, air conditioning, front and rear curtain and front lateral airbags, electronic stability programme, front electric windows, keyless ignition with Renault card and TunePoint for connecting portable music players.

Moving up the range, Expression models gain an automatic parking brake, child-minder mirror, electric rear windows, folding passenger seat and Renault’s new TFT dashboard.

The best-seller is the Dynamique, which includes 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch on dCi 150 and dCi 160 versions), automatic lights and wipers, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, hands-free keycard, leather steering wheel, multi-functional TunePoint and speed limiter.

The Renault Scenic also comes with a new TomTom Edition trim level. Based on the Dynamique, it offers Carminat TomTom satellite navigation for an additional £360 rather than the £450 cost of it as an option.

Completing the range, the flagship Privilège trim adds dual-zone climate control, electric folding mirrors, part-leather upholstery, rear parking sensors and a sliding centre storage unit.

Scenic Options where they are not standard include 18-inch alloy wheels at £500, dual-zone climate control for £400, TomTom sat-nav costing £450, adaptable first and second row headrests at £100, metallic paint for £395, parking sensors with camera at £650 and an electric panoramic sunroof costing £600.

Six comprehensive Option Packs are also offered, bundling popular items such as parking sensors, electric panoramic sunroof and satellite navigation into cost-effective packages that are cheaper than buying the equipment separately. Prices start at £250 for the Convenience Pack, rising to £1,950 for the Navigation Pack.

The Renault Scenic gets top marks for safety from EuroNCAP and is equipped with seatbelt pretensioners, front, side and curtain airbags, child seat ISOFIX anchorage points, bixenon headlamps with automatic operation and rain-sensing wipers plus active stability and understeer control and anti-slip upon acceleration, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist.

Three new engines and transmissions appear in the Renault Scenic range for the first time, including the 1.4 TCe (Turbo Control Efficiency) 130, the 2.0 VVT 140 CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and the 2.0 dCi 160 FAP.

The new TCe 130 engine, which is the third engine in Renault’s TCe range after the 100bhp and 180bhp versions, is an example of the French firm’s expertise in downsizing because it delivers the power of a 1.8-litre unit and the torque of a two-litre. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, it averages 40mpg and has a CO2 rating of 168g/km. The car can accelerate to 60mph in 10.5 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph.

The Scenic also boasts some of the lowest CO2 emissions in its class, with both the 86bhp and 106bhp versions of the 1.5 dCi engine emitting just 130g/km. In all, six eco² versions are available in the latest incarnation of Renault’s best-selling MPV.

Renault Scenic prices start at £15,520 for the 1.6 VVT 110 Extreme. The 1.5dCi 86 is £16,325.  The 1.6 VVT 110 Expression is £16,520. The Expression 1.5 dCi 106 costs £17,825.

Scenic Dynamique Tom Tom prices start at £17,720 for the 1.6 VVT 110, £19,025 for the 1.5 dCi 106, rising to £20,245 for the 1.9 dCi 130.

Privilege TomTom model prices start at £19,820 for the TCe 130 and £20,125 for the 1.5 dCi 106.

Renault Scenic Options are priced at £500 for 18-inch alloy wheels, £400 for Dual zone climate control, £450 for Carminat TomTom satellite navigation, £100 for adaptable headrests (first and second row), £395 for metallic paint, £650 for parking sensors front and rear with a rear parking camera and £600 for an electric panoramic sunroof.
