The Skoda Roomster’s cabin Varioflex foldable and removable seating offers more than 20 different combinations. The Skoda Roomster is available in one body style with four equipment grades. Fabia 1 is the entry-level trim and the range-topping models are Fabia 3 and Scout. The Scout version trades some of the Fabia 3’s features, such as cruise control and a panoramic sunroof, for robust-looking body cladding, extra ground clearance and special alloy wheels and upholstery.

All models feature front electric windows, central locking, a radio/CD with MP3 input socket and a heated rear window as well as practical details such as 12v sockets in the boot and centre console, securing loops in the boot and an adjustable rear parcel shelf. Most also feature air conditioning, alloy wheels, tinted glass and an alarm.

Floor-mounted clamps for two mountain bikes are among the practical optional extras offered.

All Skoda Roomster’s provide front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger. Some also feature curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes with dual-rate brake booster function are fitted to every Skoda Roomster. ESP stability control is optional on on all other models.

Most Skoda Roomsters have a switch that deactivates the passenger airbag to permit the use of a rear-facing child seat in the front. ISOFIX mounting points for child seats are fitted in the rear along with three-point seatbelts for all passengers.

The Skoda Roomster achieved a maximum five-star crash test rating for adult occupant protection from EuroNCAP and an impressive four stars for child protection.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders cites the Skoda Roomster 1.4 TDI 80bhp model, which produces just 135g/km of CO2, as the lowest-emission MPV in the UK. All diesel models produce less than 140g/km and even the 1.2 12v 70bhp petrol emits a modest 159g/km.

The six-engine Skoda Roomster line-up is divided equally between petrol and diesel. All place greater emphasis on fuel economy and emissions – and therefore low running costs – than ultimate sporting responses.

The most fuel-efficient petrol model is the 1.2 12v 70bhp, which combines 42.2mpg with a top speed of 98mph. A 1.4 16v 85bhp petrol increases that to 106mph and delivers more real-world pull for minimal penalty at the fuel pumps or tailpipe, with 41.5mpg and 162g/km of CO2.

The most powerful petrol engine is the 1.6 16v 105bhp. It is available with a choice of manual or automatic Tiptronic transmissions and both versions offer 114mph performance. The Tiptronic model emits 185g/km and returns an official combined 36.7mpg, while the manual model puts out 167g/km and averages 40.4mpg.

There are two 1.4 TDI PD turbodiesels, tuned to deliver 70bhp and 80bhp. The higher-powered version is the more frugal and spritely performer, mixing an extremely impressive 55.4mpg and 135g/km with 102mph. However, the 1.4 TDI PD 70bhp is a shrewd choice for those on a tighter budget and still a good all-rounder, with 139g/km, 53.3mpg and 98mph.

The range-topping engine is the 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp turbodiesel. This broad-shouldered engine is capable of taking the Skoda Roomster to 113mph yet it can also average 53.3mpg and emits 139g/km, the same as the entry-level 1.4 TDI PD.

The line-up starts at £11,260 for Skoda Roomster S trim with the 1.2 12v 70bhp petrol engine.

The entry-level diesel model is the £13,250 Skoda Roomster S 1.4 TDI PD 70bhp.

At the other extreme sits the Scout 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp turbodiesel priced at £15,380 in range-topping Skoda Roomster SE and Scout trims.

A 1.2-litre TSI 105bhp petrol model with Tiptronic automatic transmission is priced from £13,250.
