AS the UK continues to go coupe-cabriolet crazy Volkswagen weighs in with one of the most attractive models on the market, the Volkswagen Eos.
Featuring a clever folding steel roof, it further out-smarts its BMW and Audi rivals with the incorporation of a sliding sunroof too.
Despite the Eos’ compact proportions it is a four-seater and achieves a level of all-round quality and sophistication that places it very firmly in the premium sector of the market.
Although the Volkswagen Eos happens to be extremely practical, coupe cabriolets are aspirational cars and this is reflected in the generous levels of equipment on offer. All models get alloy wheels, sun roof, air conditioning or climate control, remote central locking, four electric windows, a CD player, parking sensors and height adjustment for the driver’s seat. Some models also have automatic transmission and leather upholstery, with the former being optional on most and the latter being optional on all, together with metallic paint, cruise control, electric seat adjustment and MP3 connection.
The Volkswagen Eos earns four-star safety ratings for adult and child protection and is equipped with anti-lock brakes, electronic stability programme and traction control. There are front, side and curtain air bags plus ISOFIX child seats mountings. Emissions range from 159g/km for the 1.4 TSI petrol engine to 219g/km for the 3.2 V6 unit. The 2.0 TFSI Sport has a rating of 194g/km and the 2.0 TDI is rated at 158g/km.
The 1.4 TSI Volkswagen Eos has a power output of 120bhp and a torque figure of 155lb/ft, which translates into acceleration to 60mph in 11.9 seconds, a top speed of 119mph and economy of 42.2mpg. The 2.0 TFSI raises power to 197bhp with 207lb/ft of pulling power for a 0-60mph acceleration time of 7.5 seconds, a top speed of 144mph and economy of 34.4mpg. In the case of the 3.2 V6 there is a power output of 247bhp, torque of 244lb/ft, a 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds, a 153mph top speed and economy of 47.1mpg. The 2.0 TDI generates 138bhp and has massive pulling power of 236lb/ft with acceleration to 60mph in 10.4 seconds, a top speed of 127mph and economy of 47.1mpg.
Volkswagen Eos prices start at £20,695 for the 1.4 S TSI model. The 2.0 TSI Sport is £25,800 with the TSI Individual costing £28,675. Diesel prices start at £21,925 for the 2.0 TDI, rising to £23,920 for the Sport and £26,795 for the 2.0 TDI Individual.
