VOLKSWAGEN’S extensive and diverse range starts with the Volkswagen Fox city car which boasts the same build quality and high safety standards as the rest of the range but has the lowest possible running costs.
The Fox is aimed at those who want a car that is just about the least expensive on the market to buy, with impressive economy, low emissions and an ease of driving and parking that is unparalleled.
The Volkswagen badge means that reliability, durability and inherent build-strength are taken for granted whilst residual values are among the best of any sub-supermini.
The Volkswagen Fox comes in three-door hatchback form with a choice of 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines plus standard and Urban trim levels.
THE three-door Volkswagen Fox measures just 3828mm long by 1880mm wide and 1544mm high yet interior space is good and there is a boot offering a cargo area of 270 litres with the seats up and 1016 litres with them folded flat.
Urban models come with split-folding rear seats as standard, whilst they are a £65 option on Urban models.
All models have a height-adjustable steering wheel and driver’s seat plus a CD sound system.
The Urban versions also have remote central locking and electric front windows, which like a host of other features such as alloy wheels, metallic paint, electric sunroof and air conditioning are available as extra-cost options on both models.
The
Volkswagen Fox earns a reassuring four-star
EuroNCAP safety rating for occupant protection including child protection and a two-star rating for pedestrian protection.
All models come with front driver and passenger airbags and can be fitted with side airbags for an additional £235. ISOFIX mounting points for child seats are standard in the rear.
Anti-lock brakes are standard on all models and ESP stability control is available for an additional £450.
All models emit low levels of CO2, which in the case of the 1.2-litre versions is 144g/km and in the case of the larger 1.4-litre engine is just 159g/km.
This gives the Volkswagen Fox a company car benefit-in-kind rating of 16 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.
The 1.2-litre Volkswagen Fox generates 54bhp of power and 80lb/ft of torque, or pulling power. This translates into acceleration from standstill to 60mph in 17.5 seconds with a top speed of 92mph and economy of 46mpg.
Taking every aspect of the car’s running costs into consideration the official cost per mile works out at 25 pence, which is among the lowest of any car.
The 1.4-litre Volkswagen Fox is more powerful with an output of 74bhp and pulling power of 91 lb/ft, which translates into brisker acceleration to 60mph in 13 seconds and a higher top speed of 104mph.
As this is a high-efficiency engine the economy figure is still 42.2mpg and the official cost per mile is just 29 pence.
The entry-level model is the Volkswagen Fox 1.2, which costs £7,445, followed by the more lavishly-equipped Urban version costing £8,165, Then there are two Fox 1.4-litre models. The standard version costs £8,380 and the Urban model is £9,100.
