Are healthy tyres important?

As the only point of contact between your car and the road, tyres are arguably the most important safety feature. They provide the grip for steering, braking and acceleration. And to further enhance grip, tyre tread is designed to squeeze water out from the tyres’ contact patch.

What can go wrong?

The AA estimates that 1 in 10 British motorists drive with at least one illegal tyre. The legal minimum is 1.6mm but it is recommended that you change your tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm. What’s more, 90% of all vehicles on the road have incorrect tyre pressures that adversely affect braking and steering, particularly when cornering. Sudden failure of under-inflated tyres contributes to 6% of fatal accidents. Fuel economy and environmental pollution are also compromised by incorrect pressures. Don’t forget, if your spare tyre is not regularly checked it may become illegal or under-inflated. And it’s not just safety that comes at a price. You can be fined up to £2500 and receive 3 points for each illegal tyre.

What can you do?

All tyres, including the spare, should be checked on a weekly basis when they are cold. You are looking for pressure, damage and wear. With extended service intervals on modern cars, it is vital to regularly check your tread depth readings. Remember, as your tread depth decreases, your stopping distance in wet weather will increase.
