Brakes - essential to safety
Your vehicle's brake system is an essential safety feature. Pressing the brake pedal uses brake fluid to create hydraulic pressure. This pressure actuates the brake calliper, forcing the brake pads against the disc, which causes the vehicle to slow down. When braking, pads and discs must be able to withstand and dissipate temperatures of up to 800°C. The system therefore has to endure enormous forces, pressures, strains and heat.
What can go wrong?
If the brake pads, discs and fluid are poorly maintained you could lose control of your vehicle following hard braking. It's not just the mechanical elements that need to be regularly serviced.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture, and with the heat generated in braking this can cause a vapour lock, which can lead to a complete failure of the brakes. Make sure your vehicle isn't one of the 50% of cars on the road that require a brake fluid test and flush to return them to safety standards.
Did you know?
With poorly serviced brakes the stopping distance of your car is dramatically increased.
What to look for
If you notice any of the following signs, you may have a problem with your brakes:
- Needing to press hard on the pedal
- Your car pulling to the left or right when braking
- Brakes locking
- Brakes spongy
- Your car vibrating when braking
- Brake warning light coming on
What can you do?
Check your brake fluid weekly and if it's below the minimum level or your brake warning lights come on, seek expert advice immediately. If you experience any deterioration of braking effectiveness, have the braking system checked. It is also imperative that the correct specification brakes are fitted when you need to replace them. Both sets of brake pads on the same axle should be replaced at the same time to avoid unequal braking.
